I think a good place to start would be "burning" a Ubuntu image (it's a large file with a extension) to a USB stick with UNet Boot In and then trying Ubuntu out without installing it (that's the default behavior when you boot from the live CD... There's a lot of "If you are using ..." this or that and "If xxxx fails to install ....". If you did want to fiddle around with linux on your eee 701, I tried on mine, and was surprised at how good it was.
I've tried other distros but since this boots and shuts down faster then anything I have tried and I just use it for browsing I'd like to keep this O/S.
